Inside (2007) Review
Four months after the death of her husband, a woman on the brink of motherhood is tormented in her home by a strange woman who wants her unborn baby. (From IMDB)
Inside (À l’intérieur) is a film that belongs in the new wave of extreme French horror films (see also Haute Tension). To be honest, this is truly one of the goriest films I have ever seen, genitals are stabbed, heads explode and faces are burned off. Many people will throw the term ‘torture porn’ out there to describe this movie, however I think it evolves beyond the extreme gore that films like Hostel and Saw utilize. Beneath the prevalent gore there is a genuine suspense and feeling of unease, especially in the first 30 minutes of the movie, where the antagonist goes mostly unseen. This films direction is highly stylized and the sequences are executed to make you feel genuine terror. Another great aspect is the idea that the antagonist is a veiled manifestation for the fear of motherhood. I give kudos to Dalle and Paradis, the two leading ladies, who carry this movie with their brilliant acting and believable portrayals. While the leads are strong, some of the characterization is quite unbelievable. Police officers enter a home (after hearing gun shots) and don’t call for backup. Sorry, I know that cops are supposed to be dumb in movies, but that was too much. Beyond that though I don’t have many complaints. I give this film an 8/10.
